Bluetooth Headsets & USB Hubs

Estimated reading time: 1 min

Problem: USB hubs are popular for people who only have access to one or two ports on their computer, but is it a good idea to plug your Bluetooth dongle into a hub? The answer depends on if the hub is using external power plugged into the wall or is power from the computer.

Overview of possible solutions: There are a couple of different ways you can connect your Bluetooth headset to your PC: A USB hub with or without external power, connecting directly to the PC’s Bluetooth, or plugging the Bluetooth adapter into a USB slot on the PC. Using a USB hub or the PC’s Bluetooth could result in limited call control.

Solution 1 : Sometimes your PC will only come with a couple of USB slots and in order to connect more USB devices, you have to use a USB hub. Since Poly recommends connecting the Bluetooth adapter directly into your PC, plugging it into a USB hub can cause issues with the buttons and the range of the device. This is because the hub isn’t drawing enough power from the PC to make a complete connection. Not all USB hubs are treated equal. If you have no other choice but to use a hub, this will do the trick with some lesser functionality.

Solution 2 : Connecting via Bluetooth on PC: You can also connect your headset straight into your PC if it has Bluetooth enabled. You could lose the ability to answer and hang-up the phone with your headset.

Solution 3 : Plugged into the PC: This is the sure-fire way ensure your headset will function properly. The Bluetooth adapter will be supplied with enough power to ensure you have full control over your calls. This is the way Poly intended for the headsets to be used.

Outcome: You could use a USB hub or Bluetooth controls to connect to your headset, at the cost of accessibility.
